The McCormick School of Engineering’s Department of Computer Science is a hub of interdisciplinary research across Northwestern University and a magnet for some of the brightest minds. Our people-first approach encompasses significant growth in our graduate and postdoctoral programs, an ambitious faculty hiring plan, and the launch of new institutes and research collaborations that aim to accelerate transformative advances in the field.
We’re proud of our friendly department culture and supportive mentoring system that empowers every member to succeed. Our faculty team includes 45 tenure-track, 16 clinical/teaching-track, and 25 affiliate members.
We have more than 240 doctoral students studying computer science or pursuing one our joint programs in Computer Engineering, CS + Learning Sciences, and Technology and Social Behavior. They are leading innovative and impactful research in both core and emerging disciplines, including artificial intelligence, bio-inspired vision, combinatorial statistics, human-computer interaction and information visualization, programming languages, quantum computing, robotics, systems and networking, security and privacy, and theory. Our PhD students are encouraged to explore these pioneering research areas and CS+X collaborations across the University’s top-ranked schools.
Doctoral Student Funding
All incoming PhD students receive a graduate fellowship for a year, which includes support for their first summer, to explore research with different faculty members. Subsequently, students are supported on faculty research grants and teaching assistantships. Several external and internal graduate scholarships are also available for senior students. During the 2024–25 term, PhD students will receive a $45,000 stipend rate.
Our PhD application deadline is December 1, 2024, for fall 2025 admission.
