The following announcement is from [Jade Hackett]. Please contact them directly if you have any questions.
My name is Jade Hackett, and I am a student at the University of Southern California. I am conducting a research study with Professor Souti Chattopadhyay on methods and outcomes of pair programming. You are invited to participate in this research study.
Who Can Participate
You may be eligible to participate if you:
-
are 18 years of age or older
-
are an undergraduate student, including students on summer break
-
have taken a computer science course within the past year
-
have a working knowledge of Python, including variables, loops, conditionals, functions, and common data structures such as lists and dictionaries; and can read and write Python code.
What Participation Involves
If you decide to participate, you may be asked to take part in the following activities:
-
Participate in pair programming sessions involving programming tasks
-
Complete surveys about your experiences and perceptions of pair programming
-
Participate in an interview about your experiences
The activities will take place during a single, approximately 1-hour video call. You can schedule a time of your choosing during the week of June 1 or June 8, 2026.
You may sign up either individually or with a partner of your choosing. If you sign up individually, the research team may match you with another participant. All participants must meet the eligibility criteria, register for the study separately, and will each receive the same compensation.
During surveys, you may be asked about your programming background, your experience with pair programming, and your experiences in computer science courses. Pair programming sessions may be audio and video recorded, and the researcher may observe or participate in sessions. The researcher’s role will be disclosed.
Compensation
You will receive $30 for participating in the study. Compensation will be provided electronically in the form of an Amazon gift card. If you choose to withdraw from the study, you will be compensated for the time you have already spent participating.
If you are interested in participating in this study, please fill out the screening survey at https://bit.ly/compscistudy. Please contact me at sjhacket@usc.edu if you have questions. You can also contact the study’s principal investigator, Rini Chattopadhyay, at souti@usc.edu.
Thank you!
