Undergraduate Research Experiences
Robotics and Autonomous Systems
The Department of Computer Science at University of Southern California offers a 10-week summer research program for undergraduates in Robotics and Autonomous Systems. USC has a large and well established robotics research program that ranges from theoretical to experimental and systems-oriented. USC is a leader in the societally relevant area of robotics for healthcare and populations such as children, the elderly and veterans; networked robotics for scientific discovery, covering for example environmental monitoring, target tracking, and formation control; using underwater, ground, and aerial robots; and control, machine learning, and perceptual algorithms for grasping, manipulation, and locomotion of humanoid robots. Creative Technologies
The Institute for Creative Technologies (ICT) offers a 10-week summer research program for undergraduates in interactive virtual experiences. A multidisciplinary research institute affiliated with the University of Southern California, the ICT was established in 1999 to combine leading academic researchers in computing with the creative talents of Hollywood and the video game industry. Having grown to encompass over 130 faculty, staff, and students in a diverse array of fields, the ICT represents a unique interdisciplinary community brought together with a core unifying mission: advancing the state-of-the-art for creating virtual experiences so compelling that people will react as if they were real. Natural Language Processing
The USC Information Sciences Institute's Natural Language Processing group is looking for interested and qualified students (undergraduate or graduate) to spend the summer working with ongoing research projects at USC/ISI on natural language processing, machine learning, statistical modeling, machine translation, automata, and other areas. Our group's research environment includes weekly seminars and reading groups, opportunities for teaching and advising, large quantities of linguistic resources, and a 2000-processor supercomputing cluster completely dedicated to natural language research. Students selected for this program are offered paid internships. Good programming skills are required, but prior experience in natural language processing is not necessary. We will provide tutorials on relevant topics at the beginning of the summer. Read more...Viterbi SURE Program
The Viterbi School of Engineering’s Summer Undergraduate Research Experience (SURE) program offers engineering students hands-on research experience in a wide variety of multi-disciplinary engineering programs. Working with, and supervised by faculty members here, students from all over the world develop research skills in their field, and build important relationships that will further their academic and research careers. Outstanding undergraduate students compete for positions that enable them to spend two months in sunny Los Angeles doing individual research with professors from the Viterbi School of Engineering. This research experience will be invaluable when applying for graduate programs, particularly doctoral studies. Read more...Safe, Usable, Reliable and Fair Internet (ISI)
USC's Information Sciences Institute (ISI) offers a 9-week summer research program for undergraduates in Safe, Usable, Reliable and Fair Internet. USC/ISI is a leader in networking, artificial intelligence and cybersecurity. Summer students work closely with USC/ISI faculty, staff and graduate students on diverse problems in the realm of the Internet, seeking to advance groundbreaking research projects. Students are housed at USC and visit USC/ISI each day, using a free shuttle. We also offer professional development seminars, and research seminars, to prepare program participants for graduate school. Read more...
