Dear Undergraduate Computer Science Students,
Enrollment is just around the corner! For Fall 2024 enrollment, select courses will be on D-Clearance. All D-clearance requests must be submitted on myViterbi > D-clearance Request Manager.
Only the following CSCI courses will require D-Clearance:.
CSCI 103
CSCI 170
CSCI 104
CSCI 201
CSCI 310
CSCI 360
CSCI 401
CSCI 360 will have D-Clearance removed on Monday, June 3rd. Lower division courses (CSCI 103, CSCI 170, CSCI 104, and CSCI 201) will have D-Clearance removed on Monday, June 17th. CSCI 310 and CSCI 401 will have D-Clearance throughout the entire registration period.
Computer Science department students will receive priority for d-clearance through May 20th. After May 20th, we will begin to process d-clearance requests for students outside of the CS department. D-clearance will be removed from most courses by June 17th, allowing any eligible student to enroll. Space in courses may be limited after this date, and the CS department cannot guarantee that seats will remain available. We strongly encourage all CS students to submit d-clearance requests before May 20th to ensure you are provided priority clearance to enroll.
Please carefully review the following details and dates regarding using the myViterbi D-Clearance Request Manager for CSCI courses.
- Course planning/mandatory advisement has begun, and your advisor will reach out to you soon if they have not done so already regarding the process of scheduling an advisement meeting if required. If you have not done so already, please complete the REQUIRED Google Form regarding Mandatory Advisement.
- Beginning Wednesday, March 20th, Computer Science undergraduate students will be able to submit their d-clearance requests via myViterbi. We highly recommend submitting your requests early to prevent delays in registration. Students will be allowed to submit three (3) d-clearance requests during this time. (Registration appointments have already been posted on WebReg and vary from student to student)
- We will start processing undergraduate course clearances through myViterbi on Monday, March 25th and will continue through June 17th (except CSCI 310 and CSCI 401). Do not expect a response on your request before March 25th.
- If you need to edit what courses you have submitted d-clearance requests for, you will first need to submit a Deletion Request. Deletion requests will also be required if you need to resubmit a request for a course whose d-clearance has expired. Once the Deletion request is processed, you will be able to submit a new request.
- Students are not issued a queue number on the waitlist. The system currently only supports showing queue numbers based on the submission time, which we do not use. We will give clearance based on priorities (i.e. major, graduation term, etc.). D-Clearance is processed on a rolling basis all the way until classes begin, and it cannot be provided during mandatory advisement meetings, in-person visits, via email or phone.
- How do you choose who gets the course? Requests are downloaded to a spreadsheet and sorted by seniority (entry term and units earned), GPA, and program of study. We then select the requests at the top of the sorted list based on the number of slots available. Next, we upload the approved requests back into the d-clearance system which emails the approval notifications. We also concurrently run a process that enters the d-clearance approvals into web registration (which is why it may take up to 90 minutes to activate the clearance once you get the email). At this time we are not able to show a queue number in myViterbi using this method but hopefully that will change in the future.
- There will be NO CAPS to the waiting list. If a course has 30 seats available, we will still allow unlimited requests. You will have to use your best judgment if you want to remain waiting for a popular course. You can view the number of students waiting in the “Summary Reports” option in the myViterbi D-Clearance System.
- D-clearance always expires. Please be sure to pay attention to the expiration date as it will be specified in the automatic email that updates you on your D-Clearance request status. D-Clearance will be active from time of issuance through June 17th. After this point, most coursework will be available to enroll without d-clearance.
- Whitelist the USC.EDU domain: In order to ensure you receive all emails from myViterbi, be sure to whitelist the usc.edu domain in your university Gmail account: Whitelisting the USC.EDU Domain
D-clearance extensions will not be granted if you miss the email or it ends up in your spam/junk folder.
- The D-clearance System and Web Registration System are not connected and do not communicate with each other. Once you receive a d-clearance approval email, you must add the course yourself through web registration to officially enroll. Deleting your d-clearance request will not drop you from any of your registered courses.
